MyFitnessPal Tips & Tricks

Throughout the challenge, we are all going to be tracking our food and drinks in the MyFitnessPal app. The app is very user friendly, but we wanted to give everyone a few tips to help get started!

SETTING UP YOUR MACRO GOALS

You can set your diary to track towards your specific daily macro goals. From the MORE menu, click on GOALS, then CALORIE & MACRONUTRIENT GOALS. This page will allow you to adjust your CALORIE, CARB, PROTEIN & FAT goals for each day:

CHECKING YOUR MACRO PROGRESS:

Once your macro goals are set, every time you enter a meal or snack, you will be able to see how you’re tracking towards hitting those numbers for the day. At the bottom of your DIARY, click NUTRITION and then NUTRIENTS:

ENTERING FOOD INTO YOUR DIARY:

There are multiple ways to enter food into your diary. To start, you can either click ADD FOOD under the meal you’re entering, or you can click the BLUE PLUS SIGN at the bottom of your screen. From there, you can either search the MFP database by typing a food name or brand in the SEARCH FOR A FOOD FIELD, or for packaged food, you can click on the  BARCODE on the top right of your screen to scan in your food:

You’ll also notice the tabs below the search field: RECENT, FREQUENT, MY FOODS, MEALS etc. The more you log, the more the app will remember which will make it easier and faster for you to log your meals and snacks.

Once you select a food, you will be able to adjust the SERVING SIZE to match your portion. You’ll also notice that over time, the app will start to auto-populate other foods that you often enter with the food you’ve selected:

CREATING YOUR OWN FOOD OR RECIPE :

If for some reason you can’t find the food you’re looking for in the MFP data base, you can create your own foods and manually enter the nutrition facts. Click on the MY FOODS tab, and then CREATE FOOD. That page will allow you to enter all of the info you have and save that food for future use:

Along similar lines, you can create and save your own recipes. Click the RECIPES tab, CREATE A RECIPE. From there, you have the option to import a recipe from the web or manually create your own:

COPYING MEALS FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT:

For a lot of us, it won’t be uncommon to eat the same meals multiple days in a row. For example, if you know you’re going to have the same breakfast for the next 3 days, you can copy that meal in your diary from one day to the next. Under each meal category, there is a MORE menu button (indicated by 3 dots). Click on the 3 DOTS and then either COPY TO DATE or COPY FROM DATE depending on what you want to copy and to where:

DIARY SHARING / ADDING FRIENDS:

In order to help people throughout the challenge, we’re asking everyone to add us as ‘friends’ in the app. From the MORE MENU (3 dots, bottom right of screen), click FRIENDS, and then the PLUS SIGN in the top right. Invite us using MFP USERNAME (under the EMAIL option). Add EVSTERNECK and MARIAPICONE.

Last but not least, you’ll have to adjust your settings so your friends can see your diary. From the MORE MENU, click SETTINGS, SHARING & PRIVACY, DIARY SHARING, FRIENDS ONLY:

There are a lot more features to take advantage of in the app, but this will hopefully help everyone get started. Comment below with questions or any other tips and tricks you guys come up with along the way to help make everyone’s tracking experience easier!
