Happy Friday everyone!
Hopefully you’re starting to get into a little bit of a routine with your prepping, eating and tracking. Today, we’re talking about some of our favorite grab and go packaged snacks. Whether you use snacks as a way to just hold you over until you next bigger meal or as mini meals throughout your day, snacks can be a great way to sneak in more of a particular macronutrient you may be lacking. Sometimes, our snacks may be smaller portions of foods we’ve meal prepped or fresh fruit and vegetables, but, let’s be honest- in our busy lives, sometimes we just need something we can buy and keep on hand in our cars, desks or gym bags. Luckily, if you know what you’re looking for, you can find a ton of great options out there!
Here are a few snack options we both pretty much always have on hand:
RXBARs & QUEST BARs
Fruits, nuts and egg whites. That’s it. If you’re looking for a super clean bar option, RxBars are perfect! The added egg whites give you a good source of protein that other fruit and nut bar brands are often missing. All of their flavors are tasty, but their newest flavor, Maple Sea Salt, is one of our favorites! You can find a few flavors at New Seasons or Trader Joe’s, but you can find all of their options and even order variety packs from Amazon.com or RxBar’s website directly.
Quest Bars aren’t quite as minimalist when it comes to ingredients as RxBars, but they are delicious, pack 20+ grams of protein and come in 20+ flavors: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Blueberry Muffin, S’Mores and Cinnamon Roll just to name a few! Pro Tip: throw these in the microwave for 10-15 seconds, or even better, in the oven for a few minutes, and you have soft, gooey protein cookies! Nom, nom, nom! You can find these Trader Joe’s, on Amazon.com or from Quest Nutrition directly.
Krave Jerky, Chomps Snack Sticks & Epic Bars
Who knew there were so many types of jerky out there? There’s turkey, beef, bison, lamb, wild boar and venison with flavors like basil citrus, chili lime, almond cranberry, currant mint, and Sriracha! You can have delicious, grass fed proteins available all day erryday if you want! The Chomps Snack Sticks, available at Trader Joe’s or online, are grass fed, Whole-30 approved and have 9 grams of protein per 1 oz stick. Epic Bars and Krave Jerky, both available at New Seasons, offer the more adventurous protein-flavor combos if traditional beef jerky isn’t that appealing to you. The Turkey Almond Cranberry Epic Bar and Lemon Garlic Krave Jerky are two of our favorites. For any of you still trying to bump up your protein intake, try snacking on some jerky!
Justin’s & Wild Friends Nut Butter Packets
If you have some fats to spare in your day (lucky you!) or if portion control can be a struggle (almond butter by the spoonful is a real thing), these single serve nut butter packets are great! Justin’s offers their nut butters in 1 TBSP and 2 TBSP packets and also sells almond butter + pretzels or banana chip snack packs. Wild Friends is a local company that makes several different flavors of almond butters, peanut butters, sunflower seed butters as well as limited edition seasonal flavors like Gingerbread Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Spice Peanut Butter. If you need some more protein in your snack, Wild Friends also has their Protein+ products which are whey-enhanced nut butters. You can find both of these brands at New Seasons and Whole Foods, on Amazon.com or directly from their own company websites.
Siggi’s Icelandic Yogurt
If you can tolerate dairy, try Siggi’s yogurt! We loveeeeeeeeeeeeee it! Unlike some other brands, Siggi’s yogurt isn’t overloaded with added sugars (even the flavored options!) and packs a ton of protein per cup. Similar to Greek yogurt, Icelandic yogurt is super thick and creamy; it can be eaten on its own, made into dips, mixed with fruit, nuts or cereals, or even replace sour cream in recipes. We like to get the plain or vanilla flavor and mix in PB2 (powdered peanut butter) or a little protein powder. Yummmmmmmmmmm! You can find these and other Siggi’s products at New Seasons.
Trader Joe’s Plantain Chips
We sometimes have a problem when it comes to our plantain chip consumption (#allthecarbs). Whenever the two of us meal prep together, we have at least one of these bags open to “snack on” (i.e. devour) while we cook and always do some serious damage! Trader Joe’s has 2 types of plantain chips, Sweet Plantain Chips and Roasted Plantain Chips, and both types are sooooo tasty. Once you tear open a bag, your willpower may be tested. You’ve been warned! 🙂 You could dip these into hummus, salsa or any type of nut butter, or just eat them on their own.
Snacking, when done right, can be an essential part of your healthy eating. These products are just a few that we’ve been munching on lately, but we’d love to hear what you guys like! What are your favorite snacks or brands you always have on hand? Have your snacking habits changed since we started the challenge?
